one simple Trick to Improve your Overall Health

While we always hear about how we should increase water, increase fibre, increase fruit and vegetables, limit red meat, we don’t hear much about increasing seaweed in our diets and the benefits of seaweed. We all know that its good for us but I’m not so sure we know that most of us need it daily. Seaweed is full of goodness and rich in so many properties but the one that stands out the most to me, is the quantity of iodine in it. Iodine is a mineral that we need in small amounts every day.

The World Health Organisation has stated that many of us are Iodine deficient. There are numerous research reports in Ireland to show we are deficient in Iodine. In the past foods contained more iodine but due to soil depletion and the increase in chemicals in foods that prevent the absorption of iodine, we are still in a deficient state. Governments across the world put initiatives in place for the inclusion of iodized salt in convenience foods in order to increase iodine in our diets.  However due to the cost of iodizing foods, many big companies failed to do.  This along with the reduction in salt usage in the home due of the ill health effects contributes to the ongoing iodine deficiency problems in Ireland and many other countries.

Iodine is found in each of the trillions of cells in the human body. It is responsible for the production of all the hormones, proper immune system function, cellular protection, brain function, detoxification, thyroid function and much more.  When one has iodine deficiency the first thing that happens is the formation of cysts within the breast, uterus, ovaries, prostate and the thyroid.  If this deficiency persists, these cysts become nodular and hard, they then can become hyperplastic tissue with is a precursor to cancer. Iodine has apoptotic properties which means it can stop cancer cells dividing. Apoptosis is essentially the formation of new healthy cells and the removal and replacement of harmful cells. 80% of women have fibrocystic breast disease which can be a precursor to cancer.

We can change this deficiency problem by adding seaweed to our daily diet.  Over the years we have tried to provide our family with seaweed on a regular basis but there was only so much sushi we could eat. We developed a range of foods that would provide the consumer a guaranteed dose of iodine which came from seaweed harvested in the clean coastal water of Western Ireland.  We are also aware that we are not all Michelin chefs and most of us are time poor. We developed easy to use products that are 100% organic and taste great. We have dried milled seaweeds that one can use instead of salt along with an organic artisan pasta range and a range of delicious health bars.  Its sometimes a simple matter of replacing your processed salt with seaweed, your white non nutritious pasta with organic pasta that contains seaweed and replacing your mid-morning muffin with a smrt bar that tastes like a brownie.
